Last lesson in love: Alumni mark college’s founding with ‘I dos’
123 Chinese couples decided to kill two birds in one gemstone: celebrate the 123rd anniversary of their university while tying the knot.
The group wedding was held on Saturday at Wuhan University to celebrate the institution’s founding anniversary.
One or both partners of the 123 duos were enrolled at the university. Some started off as classmates, while others met their significant others on the campus despite not attending the same academic institution.
Wuhan University is considered as one of the most beautiful academies in China thanks to its cherry flowers, which seasonally cover the paths of its campus in a white and pink blanket, attracting visitors as well as love stories.
Zheng Linyi and Xie Han were one of the pairs who had known one another since elementary school. It was during their senior year that Xie confessed his love to Zheng.
“We experience youth only once. In my younger years, you were with me, seeing me cry and seeing me smile,” Zheng expressed her feelings to Xie during the group wedding.
As laureates of the National Natural Science Award, Professors Zhang Lina and Du Yumin are known for being the “couple of science research”. Their story, too, began in the hallways of the university. At the ceremony, they offered their good wishes to the newlyweds.
Wuhan University is located in central China’s Hubei Province, and has long been famed to be among the top ten institutions in the country. It was founded under the name of Ziqiang Institute by Zhang Zhidong, the then-governor of Hubei and Hunan Provinces in 1893.
Since its establishment, the university has cultivated more than 300,00 professional talents in various occupations, over 100 of whom are members of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
